Norton Ghost is not the only software for backups.
there are lot's of others. For example Acronis True Image(by the way , it is software i'm using for backups-http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
).
every company creates something different, new, which wins over consumers.
these thing maybe just low prices, or some extra features etc. for example MS backup utility doesn't have Differential or Incremental backup option(if u want to find out differences between them and full backup go to wikipedia.org). Also there is no online backup feature, which is quite usefull.

I'll give you a little comparison to give you an idea.

Windows backup = Notepad
Backup software = Word

They both can create a document you can print, but one has many more features. Maybe Notepad does everything you need it to do or maybe you'll need some extra features and logs that some other backup software will give you.

Hope that helps you out.

And if you want an exact image copy of a hard drive or one of it's partitions, Norton's Ghost is popular. Norton also sells "Partition Magic" that allows you to partition any hard drive any time.

Because they have more features like DR (disaster recovery), virus scanning, shadow copy, copy-to-disk-to-tape functions, backup scheduling of multiple jobs, ability to back up open files, ability to back up SQL databases while in use, maintain a history of the backups with reporting, etc.

You should use your PC and for copying DVD's use DVD shrink. It works on 99% of DVD's. Use this link.

As far as u can undertand there are lot's of,
but my vote goes to Acronis True Image.
This software has just release and has some outstanding features. besides, it's rather cheap.
if u'd like to compare it with another products
here is a review

Here is what I do.

I have a simple program called second copy. I have directed it to copy all my important files from my C drive to my D drive into a folder named "C Backups" and from my D drive onto my C drive into a folder named "D" Backups. It will either sync the files or just append new depending on how I set it. Important files I have it check and back up every few hours. Some others only once a week.

One a month I copy the backups to an external hard drive and once every three months I back up a set to DVD and put them in a safe deposit box.

That is an outline of what I do and to be honest I don't have a desire to go any further. I think I am pretty well covered. Never happy about any data loss but I fell I have minimized it.

If you want to read about Second Copy go here -

Good luck with your project.

the backup utility provided by Windows isn't as complete or provide different options as some software programs you can buy. Norton ghost is an example - i can make an image of my hard drive and load that image on as may different hard drives as i would like - if the original hard drive was partitioned - Norton will partition the new hard drive automatically where with windows you will need to partition the new hard drive before you restore your backup.

You can back your pc in two ways
1. Manually

2. Use the Built it back-up utility. (It is included in the installtion package for your OS)
    - On your desktop
-click on the the start menu
         -click on accessories
         -click on system tools
         -click back-up
